The mattresses that we have on the market today are a far cry from the beds of hay that people once slept on, but even those were a big step up from sleeping on the floor of a cave like the earliest humans did. Just like everything else, mattresses can be studied as a barometer of the evolution and innovation of human beings. As science, art, industry, culture and society have advanced, so have mattresses. And it's a good thing they did, because who doesn't want to come home at night to the most comfortable sleeping surface for their individual wants and needs? Let's look at how things have evolved in the mattress world.

The first real mattresses were invented during the Neolithic period, although these were little more than rough beds made from leaves, grass, straw and animal skins. The first water beds can be traced back to Persia around 3600 BC, when the wealthy and royal ancient Persians used goatskin filled with water to sleep on. The ancient Egyptian and Roman societies developed new types of mattresses that more closely resembled what we know today, and by the 18th century people were making them out of cotton and wool. Pretty soon people were making mattress covers out of linen, and then by the 1930s manufacturers started using various synthetic materials to create smooth surfaces without the lumps and other discomforts.

Modern mattresses are made from spring and foam, and the more advanced models are even using materials such as vinyl, memory foam and vulcanized rubber. Mattresses now are designed to adopt the shape of the body and absorb the contours and movements so the individual does not feel any stress as they drift off to sleep. There are various shapes and sizes and the quality varies according to the prize one is willing to pay for them. Crib or toddler beds are the smallest sizes, ranging up to single, twin, full, queen, king and California king, or grand king.

The quality of the mattresses on the market today is defined by characteristics such as pressure distribution, hygiene, edge support, skin microclimate, durability and long-term stability. It is important to have a good mattress, because at the end of a tiring day when the body is ready to give, there are few better pleasures than a comforting and relaxing place to sleep and rejuvenate for the next day.
