Choosing youth furniture for your son or daughter can be great fun, because this is the time that they are starting to come into their own and want to choose their own furnishings to personalize their room. But shopping for youth furniture can also be a daunting task because as your little one grows up they may have greater demands for things that are not so practical. It is important to find a balance between practical, fun, safe and cool. With careful consideration it's possible to find the youth furniture that makes you both very happy.
Chances are that your guy or gal will want some colorful and decorative pieces that help them to express their individuality, and they will not be as concerned about the longevity of this furniture, how much storage it offers and how safe it is. This is where you must step in. It is important to remember that the youth furniture they pick out now might not be 'cool' a year from now, so choosing items that are more on the neutral side will probably be wise. It is much easier to switch out things like posters, comforters and paint colors when they change their tastes than to switch out the whole bedroom set because they don't like it any more.
Storage is always a concern in a child's room as well, whether they are six or 16. Youth furniture should provide storage for clothes, toys, sports equipment, books, school stuff, and everything else they use on a regular basis. There never seems to be enough drawers and shelves to house everything. Some of the smarter options on the market today include open shelving units with bins for storage, raised beds with under-bunk drawers, and study lofts with shelves and built-in desk areas for studying. Bookcase headboards, armoires, media cabinets, and desks with top hutch units are also good options to consider.
Youth furniture should be designed for safety too, without sharp edges and jagged corners. Instead, the pieces should have soft rounded corners and large pieces that don't easily fall off. Bunk beds should also have railings on the top so the sleeper doesn't fall off. Even the most well-behaved children and teens might take to rough housing from time to time, so it's just better to be safe than sorry. If it's safe, durable, practical AND fun, then everyone can be happy. |
